Antique Cam-Action Bench Vise Attributed to Stephens Patent

Description

This tool is a cast iron cam-action workbench vise, attributed to the Stephens 1870 patent design. The mechanism utilizes a ball-end lever handle to actuate an internal cam for rapid clamping and release, a design intended to provide faster adjustment than traditional screw-driven models. The vise consists of a fixed jaw integrated into a mounting base with two pre-drilled holes and a sliding movable jaw. The top of the jaws features a specific curved profile characteristic of this patent. While casting textures are visible on the side of the main body, heavy surface oxidation and pitting render any original manufacturer marks or patent dates illegible.
