Description
Vivian Chevillon (1923-2005)
Born in Vancouver, BC, raised in Seattle and Alaska, Vivian Chevillon lived a "colorful" life. She claimed to be one of the first USO "girls" and she met her husband, Chuck at a brand-new USO in Alaska. They announced their engagement on December 6, 1941, and married on Christmas Eve of that year. Vivian was evacuated from Alaska to San Diego in 1942, returning to Alaska in 1943. In 1948 she and Chuck spent a year on a lecture tour of the states, promoting statehood for Alaska. She noted "as a territory, we couldn't vote for our own governor, had no vote in Congress, but paid all federal and local taxes."
In 1949 Chuck accepted a position in San Diego and started his 50 year career as a rehabilitation equipment specialist. They moved to St. Louis in 1952, and finally moved to Lombard, Illinois in 1963 where they lived from then on. "Chevy", a nickname given to her in 1942, quickly became involved in the local art scene and taught many classes for the DuPage Art League in Wheaton. She was trained in life drawing, oils, pottery, enamels, weaving, silkscreen, printmaking, perspective, acrylics, color theory, calligraphy, scratchboard, pastel, stained glass, acrylics, casein, ink collage, and mixed media.
Vivian Chevillon was a signature member, life member and past president of the Midwest Watercolor Society, a national organization. She was an associate member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society and a life member of the DuPage Art League.
Vivian Chevillon's works can be found in hundreds of private, public and corporate collections in the U.S., Canada, Alaska, Ireland, France, Sweden, Switzerland and Saudi Arabia. Three of her paintings are in the permanent collection of The Fine Arts & Historical Museum in Anchorage, Alaska. A number of her paintings are owned by and displayed at the Helen M. Plum Memorial Library in Lombard, Illinois.
