Alexey Leonov (1934–2019) was a pioneering Soviet cosmonaut best known for becoming the first human to conduct a spacewalk on March 18, 1965, during the Voskhod 2 mission. During the historic twelve-minute EVA, Leonov floated freely outside his spacecraft, marking a major milestone in the history of human space exploration. He later commanded the Soviet half of the Apollo–Soyuz Test Project in 1975, the first joint mission between the United States and the Soviet Union, helping symbolize a thaw in Cold War tensions through cooperation in space.
