Details:
Johnny “Iron Hat” Johnston autographed commemorative airmail cover honoring the dedication of Santa Cruz Airport on November 10–11, 1934. The front features a striking multicolor printed cachet celebrating the airport dedication, issued by Santa Cruz Post No. 64 of the American Legion in conjunction with the Santa Cruz Flying Club. The cover is addressed to Joe J. Buchheit of Portland, Oregon, franked with period U.S. postage including the Byrd Antarctic Expedition II 3¢ stamp, and postmarked Santa Cruz, California.
Johnston has signed the cover on the front along the upper left edge, just above the printed cachet, in period fountain pen ink. The reverse bears the Santa Cruz Post No. 64 American Legion handstamp along with the original approval text noting U.S. Post Office authorization for air mail use only. The cover is serial numbered “549,” indicating limited production. Light, even toning and minor handling wear consistent with age; overall an attractive and well-preserved example.
Fine condition.
Johnny Johnston (1898–1937), widely known as “Iron Hat,” was one of America’s most celebrated aviators of the interwar period. A World War I combat pilot, barnstormer, air racer, and test pilot, Johnston was renowned for his daring flying style and mechanical intuition. He flew for Lockheed, competed in the National Air Races, and played a key role in advancing early American aviation before his untimely death in 1937. His autograph is especially desirable on period flight-related covers, where his legacy as a pioneer of American air travel is most directly reflected.
A scarce and visually appealing early aviation cover, pairing a notable airport dedication with the signature of one of America’s most legendary pilots—an excellent addition to any serious airmail or aviation autograph collection.
