Clarence Leonard “Kelly” Johnson (1910–1990) was one of the most influential aerospace engineers in aviation history and the legendary founder of Lockheed’s famed “Skunk Works” division. Johnson was responsible for the design and development of some of the most groundbreaking aircraft ever produced, including the P-38 Lightning, U-2 spy plane, A-12, YF-12, and the SR-71 Blackbird.
The SR-71 Blackbird remains the fastest operational air-breathing manned aircraft ever built. Designed during the height of the Cold War, the aircraft utilized advanced titanium construction, innovative aerodynamics, and cutting-edge propulsion systems to routinely exceed Mach 3 at altitudes above 80,000 feet. The July 27, 1976 record-setting flights commemorated on this cover cemented the SR-71’s place in aviation history, with the aircraft establishing absolute world speed and altitude records that remain iconic achievements in aerospace engineering.
