Michael Collins (1930–2021) was the Command Module Pilot for Apollo 11, the historic July 1969 mission that successfully landed the first humans on the Moon. While Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the lunar surface aboard Eagle, Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard Columbia, piloting the command module and ensuring the crew’s safe return to Earth. Kapton foil insulation was widely used throughout the Apollo spacecraft program due to its lightweight and heat-resistant properties, becoming one of the most visually recognizable materials associated with NASA’s lunar missions.
