Sir Douglas Bader (1910–1982) was one of Britain’s most celebrated Royal Air Force fighter aces and an enduring symbol of perseverance and courage during World War II. After losing both legs in a pre-war flying accident, Bader remarkably returned to active service using prosthetic limbs and went on to become a highly successful fighter pilot during the Battle of Britain. Credited with more than 20 aerial victories, he became a national hero for both his combat achievements and determination in overcoming extraordinary physical adversity. Following his capture by German forces in 1941, Bader remained a prominent and inspirational figure in British aviation history for the remainder of his life.
