The Apollo–Soyuz Test Project, launched in July 1975, marked the first international human spaceflight mission and symbolized a major moment of cooperation during the Cold War. American astronauts Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand, and Deke Slayton docked their Apollo spacecraft with the Soviet Soyuz crew of Alexei Leonov and Vladimir Kubasov in orbit, conducting joint experiments and exchanging greetings in space. The mission became an enduring symbol of détente and international collaboration in space exploration.
Donald “Deke” Slayton (1924–1993) was one of NASA’s original Mercury Seven astronauts and ultimately flew aboard Apollo–Soyuz after years grounded due to a heart condition.
Vladimir Kubasov (1935–2014) was a veteran Soviet cosmonaut who flew on multiple Soyuz missions and served as the Soyuz flight engineer during the Apollo–Soyuz mission.
