Akebono Tarō (1969–2024), born Chad Rowan in Hawaii, was the first non-Japanese-born wrestler ever to reach the prestigious rank of Yokozuna, the highest rank in professional sumo. Debuting in Japan in the late 1980s, Akebono became one of the sport’s most dominant and recognizable champions, winning multiple top division tournaments and helping bring international attention to sumo wrestling during the 1990s.
