Included in this lot are signatures from several of the most important figures in Negro League and early African American baseball history. Ernie Banks (1931–2015), though best remembered as the beloved Chicago Cubs superstar known as “Mr. Cub,” began his professional career in the Negro Leagues with the Kansas City Monarchs before becoming one of Major League Baseball’s first Black stars and a Hall of Fame inductee. Monte Irvin (1919–2016) starred in the Negro Leagues with the Newark Eagles before helping integrate Major League Baseball with the New York Giants, later earning induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973. Buck Leonard (1907–1997), often called the “Black Lou Gehrig,” was one of the greatest first basemen in Negro League history and a cornerstone of the legendary Homestead Grays dynasty. Bob “The Rope” Boyd (1919–2004) pitched in both the Negro Leagues and Major League Baseball, including time with the Memphis Red Sox and later the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles organization.
