Details:
Harry Monty autographed “Animals in Space” commemorative cover featuring imagery of Laika, Enos, Sputnik 2, and Mercury-Atlas space missions, postmarked July 20, 1979, at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. Monty has boldly signed the front of the cover in blue ink. Included on the reverse is an additional handwritten note by Monty reading: “Sorry I do not have any photos of my self left. They are all gone,” signed “Harry Monty.” The handwritten message adds a scarce and personal touch from the longtime “Wizard of Oz” performer.
Fine condition.
Harry Monty (1909–1999) was one of the actors who portrayed a Flying Monkey in the classic 1939 MGM film “The Wizard of Oz.” Though best known for the film’s Munchkin characters, the elaborate Flying Monkey sequences became some of the movie’s most visually memorable and enduring fantasy elements. In later decades, surviving cast members associated with “The Wizard of Oz” became highly sought after by collectors and fans of classic Hollywood cinema. Personal handwritten notes such as the example included here offer an especially interesting glimpse into the steady demand these performers received from autograph collectors throughout their lives.
