Filippo Pistrucci (1783–1855) was an Italian gem engraver and medallist who became Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint in London. He is best known for his iconic depiction of St. George slaying the dragon, first used on the British gold sovereign in 1817—a design that remains in use today and is regarded as one of the most enduring coin motifs in numismatic history.
Light toning and scattered foxing consistent with age; fold lines present from original mailing. An attractive and historically significant signed letter from the master engraver behind one of Britain’s most famous coin designs.
