Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he began his career at the Chicago Tribune in 1921, working as an assistant art manager and cartoonist. Youngren created several comic features, including The Last Word on Etiquette, Rambling Through the Want Ads, and Classified Cholly, blending wit with a keen observational style. He later contributed to national publications and worked for the Hallmark Greeting Card Company, leaving a lasting impact on American cartooning through his distinctive style and humor.
