Francis Cardinal Spellman autographed 6.5 x 9” printed photographic image depicting the Cardinal seated in his vestments while reading from a book. Spellman has inscribed the lower margin, “Mrs Donald Currier and David with best wishes,” and signed beneath in ink, “† Francis Cardinal Spellman.”

Francis Cardinal Spellman (1889–1967) served as Archbishop of New York from 1939 until his death and was one of the most influential Catholic leaders in the United States during the mid-20th century. Elevated to the College of Cardinals in 1946, he played a prominent role in both religious and political life, advising U.S. presidents and becoming widely known for his strong support of American troops during World War II and the Cold War. Spellman’s leadership helped shape the modern Catholic Church in America and expanded the Archdiocese of New York into one of the most prominent Catholic institutions in the country.
