William Westmoreland autographed 6 x 9” commemorative first day of issue stamp honoring the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, postmarked Washington, D.C., November 10, 1984. The commemorative card features imagery of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall along with the official 20¢ Vietnam Veterans Memorial United States postage stamp. Westmoreland has signed boldly along the lower portion of the card and added the inscription, “General U.S. Army (Retired).”

General William C. Westmoreland (1914–2005) served as commander of United States military operations in Vietnam from 1964 to 1968 during the height of the Vietnam War. A graduate of West Point, Westmoreland later served as Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1968 to 1972. One of the most recognizable and controversial military leaders of the Cold War era, he became closely associated with America’s military strategy in Vietnam and remained an influential public figure in discussions surrounding the conflict for decades afterward.
