The American Volunteer Group, better known as the Flying Tigers, was formed in 1941 under the leadership of Claire Lee Chennault and became one of the most celebrated fighter units of World War II. Flying Curtiss P-40 Warhawks adorned with the iconic shark-mouth nose art, the AVG fought against Japanese forces in China and Burma before the United States formally entered the war. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Flying Tigers earned an extraordinary combat record and became legendary for their aggressive tactics, skillful aerial combat, and morale-boosting victories during the early months of the Pacific War.
Among the signers, David Lee “Tex” Hill became one of the AVG’s leading aces and later a distinguished U.S. Air Force general. Charles “Charlie” Bond and Charles “Chuck” Older were also highly regarded Flying Tigers pilots, with Older later serving as a Los Angeles Superior Court judge and presiding over the Charles Manson murder trial. Erik Shilling, Dick Rossi, Ed Rector, and the other signers all played roles in one of the most iconic aviation units of the Second World War, making this cover an impressive gathering of Flying Tigers veterans and signatures.
