General James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle (1896–1993) was one of the most celebrated aviators in American history and is best remembered for leading the famed Doolittle Raid on Tokyo on April 18, 1942, the first American air attack against the Japanese mainland following Pearl Harbor. A pioneering pilot, aeronautical engineer, and military strategist, Doolittle made significant contributions to aviation both before and during World War II, including advancements in instrument flying and combat aviation tactics. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his leadership of the Tokyo raid and later rose to command the Eighth Air Force in Europe. Doolittle remains one of the defining figures of twentieth-century aviation history.
