Charles Sweeney autographed First Day Cover honoring President Harry S. Truman, postmarked May 2, 1973, signed neatly in black ink across the lower portion. Accompanied by a modern unsigned glossy 8 x 10” photograph depicting the historic Boeing B-29 Bockscar, the aircraft commanded by Sweeney during the atomic bombing mission over Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The image prominently displays the famous nose art of the aircraft.

Charles W. Sweeney (1919–2004) was a United States Army Air Forces major general and pilot best known for commanding the B-29 Bockscar during the second atomic bombing mission of World War II. On August 9, 1945, Sweeney piloted the aircraft that dropped the “Fat Man” atomic bomb over Nagasaki, Japan, a mission that played a pivotal role in bringing the war to an end. A veteran of the 509th Composite Group, Sweeney later remained active in military and veterans affairs and became one of the most recognized surviving figures connected to the atomic missions of 1945.
