Benjamin Stoddert Ewell clipped signature on a small paper fragment measuring approximately 3 x 1.5”.
Ewell (1810–1871) was a career U.S. Army officer who later served as a Confederate general during the Civil War. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he served in the Seminole Wars and the Mexican-American War before aligning with Virginia at the outbreak of the Civil War. He rose to the rank of major general in the Confederate Army and commanded troops during key campaigns in the Eastern Theater.
