Details:
Abraham Lincoln memorial ribbon measuring approximately 2.75 x 9.5” issued by Grand Army of the Republic Long Beach Post No. 181 of Long Beach, California. The black mourning ribbon features a portrait of Lincoln at the top above the silver-lettered phrase “In Memoriam,” with the G.A.R. insignia prominently displayed at center. Decorative bullion fringe remains intact along the lower edge. The reverse retains its original patriotic red, white, and blue backing with crossed American flags.
Near fine condition overall with expected age-related wear.
The Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was a prominent fraternal organization composed of Union Civil War veterans founded in 1866. Memorial ribbons such as this were produced for commemorative ceremonies, memorial observances, and reunions honoring Abraham Lincoln and the sacrifices of Union soldiers. Pieces tied to regional G.A.R. posts are increasingly difficult to locate and represent an evocative surviving relic of late 19th and early 20th century Civil War remembrance culture.
