Gerald R. Ford (1913–2006) served as the 38th President of the United States from 1974 to 1977 following the resignation of President Richard Nixon during the Watergate scandal. Previously serving as Vice President under Nixon and as longtime House Minority Leader, Ford became the only individual in American history to assume both the vice presidency and presidency without being elected to either office. His presidency focused heavily on restoring public confidence in government during a period of political turmoil, most notably through his controversial pardon of Nixon. Ford later remained an influential statesman and respected elder figure in American political life.
