Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890–1969), the 34th President of the United States, played a pivotal role in the formative years of the American space and missile program during the height of Cold War competition with the Soviet Union. His administration oversaw the creation of NASA in 1958 and the rapid expansion of American aerospace and defense infrastructure at Cape Canaveral and related installations.
Mamie Eisenhower (1896–1979), wife of President Eisenhower and First Lady of the United States from 1953 to 1961, remains one of the more recognizable First Ladies of the twentieth century.
James E. Webb (1906–1992) served as NASA Administrator from 1961 to 1968 and was instrumental in guiding the Apollo program through its formative years, ultimately laying the administrative and political groundwork that led to the Moon landing. The James Webb Space Telescope was later named in his honor.
