Clyde Tombaugh (1906–1997) was the American astronomer credited with the discovery of Pluto while working at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. On February 18, 1930, after painstakingly comparing photographic plates of the night sky, Tombaugh identified the celestial object that would become recognized as the ninth planet of the solar system for much of the twentieth century. His discovery represented one of the most significant astronomical achievements of the era and made Tombaugh an enduring figure in the history of space science and exploration.
