STS-35 launched aboard Space Shuttle Columbia on December 2, 1990, and carried the ASTRO-1 observatory payload, a major ultraviolet astronomy mission designed to study stars, galaxies, and other celestial phenomena. Commanded by veteran astronaut Vance Brand, the mission included mission specialists Jeffrey Hoffman, John Lounge, and astrophysicist Samuel Durrance, alongside pilot Guy Gardner. Over the course of the nine-day flight, the crew conducted around-the-clock astronomical observations using a suite of telescopes mounted in the Shuttle payload bay. The mission represented one of NASA’s most ambitious Shuttle-based astronomy programs of the era and contributed valuable ultraviolet imaging and spectrographic data to the scientific community.
