STS-34 launched aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis on October 18, 1989, and is best remembered for deploying the Galileo spacecraft on its historic journey to Jupiter. Commanded by Donald Williams with Michael McCulley serving as pilot, the mission successfully released Galileo along with its Inertial Upper Stage booster, sending the probe toward the outer solar system where it would later revolutionize scientific understanding of Jupiter and its moons. Mission specialists Franklin Chang-Díaz, Ellen Baker, and Shannon Lucid supported payload operations and scientific experiments during the five-day mission. Galileo would go on to become one of NASA’s most successful and scientifically important planetary exploration missions.
