STS-32 was flown aboard Space Shuttle Columbia from January 9–20, 1990. The mission is best remembered for the successful retrieval of the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF), a school bus-sized scientific satellite that had spent nearly six years in orbit collecting valuable data on the effects of the space environment on various materials and experiments. The mission also deployed the Syncom IV-F5 communications satellite.
The crew consisted of Commander Daniel C. Brandenstein, Pilot James D. Wetherbee, and Mission Specialists Bonnie J. Dunbar, Marsha S. Ivins, and G. David Low. Wetherbee later became one of NASA’s most experienced Shuttle commanders, while Low played a significant role in advancing human spaceflight programs before his passing in 2008. The mission represented an important step in NASA’s continuing Shuttle-era scientific and satellite operations.
