STS-33 was flown aboard Space Shuttle Discovery from November 22–27, 1989, as a classified Department of Defense mission for the United States Air Force. Launching from Kennedy Space Center, the mission marked Discovery’s ninth flight and represented one of several high-profile military Shuttle missions conducted during the late Cold War era. Due to the classified nature of the payload and objectives, many operational details of the mission remain undisclosed.
The crew consisted of Commander Frederick D. Gregory, Pilot John E. Blaha, and Mission Specialists Story Musgrave, Kathryn C. Thornton, and Sonny Carter. Gregory became the first African American to command a Space Shuttle mission, while Musgrave later became one of NASA’s most accomplished astronauts with six Shuttle flights. Sonny Carter, a physician, naval aviator, and astronaut, was tragically killed in a commercial plane crash in 1991, adding historical significance to fully signed crew material from his missions.
