Commanded by Loren Shriver with Charles Bolden serving as pilot, the mission successfully released Hubble from the Shuttle payload bay, beginning a new era in astronomy and deep space observation. Mission specialists Steven Hawley, Bruce McCandless II, and Kathryn Sullivan supported deployment operations and conducted system checks during the five-day mission. Hubble would go on to revolutionize humanity’s understanding of the universe through its unprecedented imagery and scientific discoveries.
