STS-30 launched aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis on May 4, 1989, and is best remembered for deploying the Magellan spacecraft, NASA’s first planetary probe launched from the Space Shuttle program. Commanded by David Walker with Ronald Grabe serving as pilot, the mission successfully sent Magellan on its journey to Venus, where it would later map the planet’s surface using radar imaging in unprecedented detail. Mission specialists Norman Thagard, Mary Cleave, and Mark Lee supported deployment operations and conducted scientific experiments during the four-day mission.
