Dr. Denton A. Cooley (1920–2016) was one of the most influential heart surgeons in medical history and a pioneer in the development of cardiovascular surgery and artificial heart technology. Founder of the Texas Heart Institute, Cooley performed more than 100,000 open-heart surgeries during his career and gained worldwide recognition in 1969 for implanting the first total artificial heart in a human patient as a bridge to transplantation. His groundbreaking work transformed the field of cardiac medicine and established him as one of the foremost surgeons of the twentieth century. Original hand-drawn sketches by Cooley are highly desirable additions to medical and scientific autograph collections due to their direct connection to his pioneering work in heart surgery.
