Details:
Elmer Lamplugh archive consisting of eight original pieces related to his U.S. Navy service, polar expedition work, and death in Korea in 1949. The centerpiece of the archive is an original 8 x 10” silver gelatin photograph of Antarctic explorer Richard B. Black, personally inscribed and signed to Lamplugh: “To Elmer Lamplugh of East Base, with high regard, and with sincere good wishes for the future,” signed with initials “R.B.B.” dated Pearl Harbor, December 9, 1943. The lower signature and expedition text are printed within the original photograph as issued. Black was a noted member of the United States Antarctic Service Expedition of 1939–1941.
Also included is an exceptional typed letter signed by Elmer Lamplugh on Boston College Greenland Expedition letterhead, written to his wife Ann from Washington, D.C. while assisting with preparations for a polar expedition under Commander F.G. Dustin. The detailed multi-page letter discusses meetings with President Harry Truman’s administration, Secretary of Labor Maurice Tobin, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson, and Undersecretary of State Ernest Gross regarding expedition approvals and logistics with the Danish government. Lamplugh writes candidly about politics, expedition financing, and his growing confidence while working among senior government officials.
Additional material includes:
• Silver gelatin printed typed copy of a condolence letter from Admiral Richard E. Byrd dated November 2, 1949, sent following Lamplugh’s death, praising him as a valued member of Byrd’s expeditions and noting that his contributions had become “part of the national record.” This signature on this letter is a printed period facsimile.
• Foreign Service document from Seoul, Korea regarding the return of Lamplugh’s personal effects after his death at Kimpo Airport near Seoul on September 23, 1949.
• U.S. Navy Radio Engineering School certificate issued to Ensign Elmer L. Lamplugh in 1943.
• U.S. Naval Hospital orders document from Oakland, California dated 1946.
• 1925 United States Veterans Bureau document relating to adjusted service compensation.
