The borders and territories during this period are very interesting and provide insight into the rapid changes taking place at the time. The large New Mexico Territory extends between California and Texas, Alaska is Russian America, Nebraska extends to the Canadian border, both Washington and Oregon extend to the Continental Divide, Oklahoma is entirely Indian Territory and this is one of the earliest maps to show a separate Dakotah. There is no sign of Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, or Wyoming or West Virginia. Similarly, in Canada, much of the political subdivisions carry differing names and/or borders vs. today's arrangement. Names of Indian nations, forts, rivers, etc. are shown. The Colton decorative border is yet to appear. From the first edition, second issue of Colton's General Atlas.
