Under Wraps was photographed in the first half of 2020, when the artist was confined at home for an extended period and began photographing everyday objects in the house. The flowers in the image had originally been fresh, but were later replaced with artificial ones when no new flowers were available. One day, the artist's mother found the plastic flowers too dusty and difficult to clean, so she covered them with a layer of gauze. The arrangement remains in the home to this day. The work transforms an ordinary domestic object into an image marked by time and lived experience, preserving the subtle texture of home life during an unusual period.
Liu Jiangling is from Nanjing, Jiangsu, and is now based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. A graduate of the China Academy of Art, he is a photographer, designer, and researcher of historic architecture. His photographic works have been exhibited in galleries and art spaces in Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou, and are marked by strong visual sensitivity and a keen awareness of space.
