Description
Location: Songxianqiao, Chengdu
Series: Humanism in China, No. 521
Medium: Archival digital giclee print
Edition: 1/10
Bird Fighting was photographed in Songxianqiao, Chengdu, using an overhead view to frame a folk bird-fighting scene. The spectators form a tight structure of looking within a narrow space, while the cages and tools on the ground become the visual center, their vivid color standing out sharply against the subdued surroundings. The work continues Chen Jin's sustained attention to everyday urban life and vernacular culture in China, presenting-through restrained and calm observation-an almost ritualized atmosphere of collective watching, while also revealing the inner order and rhythm of ordinary life.
Chen Jin, born in Chengdu in 1955, is a member of the China Photographers Association, an advisor to the Sichuan Photographers Association, and former senior editor at Sichuan Fine Arts Publishing House. He has published photo books including Marketplace, Marketplace China, Reflections on Chengdu, Sichuan Teahouses, Tea Affairs of Sichuan People, and Teahouses. He received the 9th China Photography Golden Image Award, the International Folklore Photography Human Contribution Award, the Bashu Literature and Art Award, and the Bashu Literature and Art Special Award.
