Description
Iconography and Artistry
The Obverse: Features the vigorous forepart of a Leaping Lion, with its head turned back in a classic defensive posture. The lion was a traditional symbol of Thracian strength and royal authority, rendered here with the muscular tension and artistic finesse typical of late 4th-century Greek engraving.
The Reverse: A sophisticated quadripartite incuse square. Two of the recessed quadrants are filled with silver, while the other two contain specific control marks—in this specimen, a barley grain and a pellet accompanied by the Greek letter "A". These symbols were the personal marks of city magistrates, ensuring the weight and purity of the silver.
Grade: Choice Very Fine (Ch. VF) – Distinguished by the sharp detail in the lion’s mane and the deep, well-defined strike of the incuse square.br>
This specimen is a premier example of maritime history, offering a direct connection to the strategic naval powers of ancient Thrace.
