Description
Struck in 54 BC during a period of intense political maneuvering in the Roman Republic, this silver Denarius is a sophisticated piece of genealogical propaganda. The moneyer, Q. Pompeius Rufus, designed this issue to celebrate his unparalleled lineage as the grandson of both Sulla the Great (the Dictator) and Q. Pompeius Rufus, the two consuls of 88 BC. In a departure from the traditional use of deity portraits, this coin utilizes the physical symbols of Roman magistracy to assert the moneyer’s inherited right to power.
The Obverse: Features the Curule Chair (Sella Curulis) of Sulla, the quintessential seat of high-ranking Roman magistrates. It is flanked by a lituus (augur's staff) and a wreath, symbols of religious and military triumph. The legend SVLLA COS (Sulla, Consul) honors the legacy of his grandfather's first consulship.
The Reverse: Depicts the Curule Chair of his paternal grandfather, the elder Q. Pompeius Rufus. It is flanked by an arrow and a laurel branch, symbolizing military success. The legend Q POMPEI RVF (Q. Pompeius Rufus, Consul) completes this dual tribute to the consular power of 88 BC.
