Description
This silver Didrachm is a magnificent relic from the late Hellenistic era, struck during the second reign of Ptolemy VI Philometor. Ruling from the throne of Alexandria, Ptolemy VI navigated a world of shifting dynastic rivalries and increasing Roman intervention. This coinage served as a defiant statement of the Ptolemaic dynasty’s enduring sovereignty and divine right to rule Egypt. Each strike of the hammer at the Alexandrian mint was intended to project the image of a stable, wealthy empire to the merchants and soldiers of the Mediterranean.
Iconography and Artistic Merit
The Obverse: Features the classic, diademed portrait of Ptolemy I Soter, the founder of the dynasty and companion of Alexander the Great. The Reverse: Depicts the quintessential Eagle of Zeus standing majestically upon a winged thunderbolt. Flanking the eagle is the authoritative Greek legend ?????????? ???????? (Ptolemaiou Basileos – of King Ptolemy), a design that remained virtually unchanged for centuries as a symbol of maritime power and economic trust.
