Description
The Historical Narrative: The Veteran Colony of Philippi. Struck between 27 BC – AD 14, this bronze issue from the Roman colony of Philippi (Macedonia) is a direct numismatic link to the monumental Battle of Philippi. Following the victory over Brutus and Cassius, Augustus settled veterans from the Praetorian cohorts in the city, transforming it into a vital Roman stronghold. This coinage was issued to honor the military foundation of the colony and its loyalty to the first Emperor.
Iconography and Artistry
The Obverse: Features Victory standing left on an altar, holding a wreath and a palm branch. The legend VIC AVG (Victoria Augusti) celebrates the divine success of Augustus that secured the peace of the Empire.
The Reverse: Depicts three legionary standards (signa), a powerful symbol of the military cohorts that settled the region. The surrounding legend COHOR PRAE PHIL (Cohortes Praetoriae Philippensium) identifies the specific military units of the colony.
A fascinating historical piece reflecting the transformation of a battlefield into a pillar of the Roman Empire.
