Description: Attributed to Basil II & Constantine VIII (c. AD 976–1025). The Historical Narrative: The Divine Sovereignty. Struck during the zenith of the Macedonian Renaissance, this "Anonymous Follis" marks a significant shift in imperial ideology. By removing the Emperor’s portrait and replacing it with the image of Christ, the Byzantine state sought to emphasize that the true ruler of the Empire was not a mortal man, but the King of Kings. These coins were the spiritual and economic currency of the medieval Mediterranean, bridging the gap between faith and finance. Obverse: A powerful facing bust of Jesus Christ, portrayed with a nimbus cruciger (cruciform halo). He holds the Book of Gospels, symbolizing divine wisdom and law. Reverse: Features the definitive four-line legend: +IhSVS / XRISTVS / bASILEV / bASILE (Jesus Christ, King of Kings), a bold declaration of theocratic authority.
