Description: Historical Narrative: The Captured Emperor. Struck during the peak of the 3rd-century crisis, this Antoninianus represents the tumultuous reign of Valerian I. As the only Roman Emperor to be captured in battle and held as a prisoner of war by the Sassanids, Valerian's coinage serves as a poignant historical record of an empire struggling for survival. This issue reflects the late-stage debasement of the silver currency, where a thin layer of silvering was applied to a bronze core to maintain the illusion of economic stability.

Iconography & Artistry
Obverse: Features a radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valerian I facing right. The radiate crown identifies him with the sun god Sol, a standard mark for the Antoninianus denomination.
Reverse: Depicts Oriens (the personification of the East) standing left, right hand raised in a gesture of benediction and left hand holding a globe or whip. The legend ORIENS AVGG celebrates the Emperor’s efforts to secure the Eastern frontiers.
