Description: Lucania | c. 420–390 BC. The Historical Narrative: The First Labor. Struck in the prosperous coastal city of Herakleia in Southern Italy, this silver Diobol captures a quintessential mythological struggle of the ancient world: the First Labor of Herakles. The hero is depicted in the heat of battle against the invulnerable Nemean Lion. The obverse pays homage to Athena, the protector goddess, whose helmet features the mythical sea-monster Skylla, a direct nod to the maritime dominance of Magna Graecia.
Obverse: Head of Athena right, wearing a crested Attic helmet ornately decorated with the sea-monster Skylla.
Reverse: Herakles standing right, engaged in fierce combat. He grapples the rearing Nemean Lion with his left hand while raising his signature club overhead in his right hand to strike.Technical Specifications, Metal: Silver (AR). Denomination: Diobol.
