The voyage (1839–1843), undertaken at the instigation of the British Association for the Advancement of Science to conduct magnetic observations in the southern hemisphere, was carried out in the specially strengthened naval vessels HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. The expedition confirmed the existence of the Antarctic continent, inferred the position of the South Magnetic Pole, explored what is now known as the Ross Sea, and discovered the vast Ross Ice Shelf together with the volcanoes Mount Erebus and Mount Terror, which he named after his ships. by The Nautical Magazine.
