A chart of the Bahamas extending westward to the southeastern tip of Florida, including Biscayne Bay, Cape Florida and the future sites of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Though centred on the Bahamas, it is notable for its early depiction of South Florida. The chart extends from Cape Florida eastward to Abaco, Eleuthera and New Providence, and includes coastal profiles of Gun Cay, Bimini and Abaco, with their lighthouses. The map marks the site of Cape Florida Lighthouse, first constructed in 1825 and regarded as the earliest surviving historic structure in South Florida. It was attacked and burned during the Second Seminole War in July 1836, contemporary with the publication of this chart, and constructed by 1847. . Commander Richard Owen, HMS Thunder. Published 1836. Antique engraved map. Size 20 x 37 cm | 7.5 x 14.5 inches. Condition: Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase.
