Description
A beautifully expressive example of traditional Korean mother-of-pearl inlay, this lacquer smoking box carries the quiet soul of true hand craftsmanship.
The lid features two phoenix birds rendered in an intentionally organic, almost primitive style"”confident lines, imperfect symmetry, and a composition that clearly announces: this was made by an artist's hand. The abalone inlay shimmers with shifting tones of violet, jade, and silver against a deep, lustrous lacquer ground.
Surrounding the central panel is a slightly convex border with a subtle crackled bamboo-like treatment, adding depth and dimension to the surface. The effect is tactile and architectural rather than decorative alone.
Inside, the removable cigarette box lid features a scattered floral inlay composition that may at first appear irregular. Closer examination reveals this was intentionally executed"”an homage to humility in craftsmanship and the philosophy of wabi sabi: beauty found in imperfection, asymmetry, and honest making. The lacquer surface remains smooth and continuous, original to the workshop.
The interior includes:
Removable lidded cigarette compartment with inlay
Central recess
Metal ash bowl insert
The lacquer retains a rich depth of color and gloss. There is a small, proportional chip to the abalone border on the upper right of the outer lid, noted for accuracy but not visually distracting. The box shows honest, age-appropriate wear consistent with use and history, adding to its character rather than diminishing it.
This is a piece that feels lived-in in the best sense"”an object with story, presence, and integrity.
