Mid 20th Century Korean Red Lacquer Smoking Box With Mother-of-Pearl Inlay – Complete Set

Description

Striking mid-century Korean smoking box in a rich, high-gloss tomato red lacquer, exquisitely inlaid with iridescent mother-of-pearl.

The rectangular form opens to reveal its original fitted interior, including removable lidded compartment and metal ash receptacle. The lid and interior panel are adorned with traditional Korean symbols rendered in abalone shell "” a scholar's hat and pipe, floral branch in vase, and stylized characters conveying longevity and good fortune. The inlay shimmers beautifully against the saturated lacquer ground, shifting from soft pearl to flashes of green and rose under changing light.

The interior metal insert bears a double-happiness motif, reinforcing the box's auspicious symbolism.

The piece is complete and in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or structural damage. The lacquer remains vibrant and glossy with only light, age-appropriate surface wear consistent with careful use.

A beautiful example of mid-century Korean decorative lacquer work "” both functional and sculptural. Equally at home styled on a cocktail table, desk, or displayed as an object of art.
