19th Century Chinese Blue & White Organic Scalloped Scholar Plate

Description

There is something quietly sculptural about this piece.

A 19th century Chinese blue and white porcelain plate featuring a softly undulating, organic rim "” intentionally irregular, almost wave-like in form. The shape alone distinguishes it from more formal export examples and gives it a subtle wabi-sabi presence.

The surface is richly hand-painted in layered underglaze cobalt. Phoenix and dragon medallions alternate with scrolling florals, framed within a Greek key border. The brushwork is confident and fluid "” lively but controlled "” with beautiful tonal variation in the blue.

The plate sits low and broad, with a gently rising profile that feels more sculptural than flat. It displays beautifully upright or layered into a collection.

An elegant balance of movement, tradition, and restraint.
