Original steel engraving by J.H. Colton, 1871. The map details the geography of Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana during the 19th century. Vignettes include Rio de Janeiro and Pernambuco. At the time this map was made, Brazil was an empire under the control of Pedro II. Much of the 1850s was a period of Prosperity for Brazil due to Pedro's maturation and consolidation of power.
