About the Artist
Victor Vasarely (1906–1997) was a Hungarian-French artist widely recognized as the grandfather of the Op Art movement. He is famous for his optical illusions, geometric abstractions, and kinetic creations.
"Octa" / "OC-TA": This is the title of one of his iconic geometric Op Art designs. The motif uses precise arrangements of shapes and contrasting colors (or black and white) to create a vibrating, 3-dimensional, and unstable optical effect.
Lahumière: Éditions Lahumière has collaborated with Vasarely to publish, produce, and authenticate a number of his original screenprints (sérigraphies) and multiples.Because Vasarely's prints feature strict grids and mathematical permutations, you can learn more about the exact sizing, edition sizes, and authenticity of Lahumière-published pieces by consulting the Galerie Lahumière or exploring their verified collections on platforms like MutualArt.
Victor Vasarely's complex paintings and sculptures helped define the ethos of the Op art movement. The artist's vibrant compositions feature a mix of rigidly geometric and more fluid forms which, when combined with monochromatic or diverse color palettes, produce the optical illusions that give Op art its name. Vasarely studied medicine at the University of Budapest before dropping out to embrace a career in visual art. His immersion in scientific methodology and objectivity informed his work, as did the theories of Josef Albers and Wassily Kandinsky. Vasarely exhibited widely during his lifetime in cities including New York, Paris, Cologne, Caracas, and Budapest, and his work belongs in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, and the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, Tate, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) among others.
