Timo Sarpaneva (1926 - 2006) was a Finnish designer who made Finnish design world-famous. Sarpaneva graduated from the Institute of Industrial Arts in 1948 and began working for the Iittala glassworks in 1950, for which he created glass sculptures that attracted a great deal of attention. Many of his designs are today regarded as icons of Finnish glass design, such as Lansetti, Orkidea, Finlandia or the Claritas art objects. He often used newly emerging technologies in his work. In the early 1950s, for example, he worked with steam blowing technology. From the mid-1960s, he created his Finlandia series of vases blown into charred wooden molds. In 1978 he created the Arkipelago glass series and in 1984 the Clariats art glass objects. Sarpaneva worked with a wide variety of materials. In addition to glass and ceramics, he also used textiles, silver, steel and cast iron. He designed stage sets as well as lamps and created graphics. From 1988 Sarpaneva worked with Venini, Murano. Today, his works can be seen in many museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Corning Museum of Glass.
