Description
Napoleone Martinuzzi for Alfredo Barbini Art Glass Vase 1962
A large and heavy glass vase, made by Alfredo Barbini for the retailer Pauli & Cie. Designed by Napoleone Martinuzzi in 1962. Made of clear glass with a pink inlay, the entire surface with a matte martelure finish. Marked with a vintage Pauli label on the base. The sculptural vase is an archetype of 20th-century Murano glass art and one of Napoleone Martinuzzi's most famous designs.
Napoleone Martinuzzi was born in Murano in 1892, the son of a glassblower. He attended the Belle Arti school in Venice and was a member of the Ca' Pezzaro secessionist group. In 1921, he became director of the Murano Museum and in 1925, artistic director at Venini. Martinuzzi's work for Venini is known for its use of experimental techniques with opaque and semi-transparent glass (pulegoso, lattimo, calcedonio). His use of classical antique forms in bright colors set new standards for Murano glass. In 1932, Martinuzzi left Venini and founded Zecchin-Martinuzzi, but the company only lasted a few years. In the post-war period, he worked for Seguso Arte Vetro, Vetreria Cenedese, Alfredo Barbini, and Pauly & C., among others.
